From health and harassment to income security and loans, India's gig workers need support

By The Wire

Leaders of unions for gig workers in India want government and platform companies to boost the socio-economic and healthcare protection for the workers in light of the outbreak of COVID-19.

The Indian Federation of App-based Transport Workers, the Ola and Uber Drivers and Owners’ Association (OTU), among others want the companies to compensate workers for lost income, provide medical insurance, and adequate PPE to workers free of cost.

The Unions say that so far, relief measures announced by the central and state governments do not specifically provide for gig workers yet the platforms they work for have also failed to provide inadequate or meaningful protection, putting the workers at risk.
